"In Plain Sight" is a photojournalistic look at the lives and careers of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields, where they are often overlooked. Women are underrepresented in these fields and are rarely seen in the media as STEM professionals. Simon Fraser University’s WWEST program has developed this exhibition to further its mission to engage industry, the community and students to increase the awareness and participation of women and other under-represented groups in STEM fields of study and careers.

Deanna Flinn, of Free Admission Photography, has captured the aspects of these women's lives that are not often seen as congruent with a career in a STEM field. Family, community, advocacy, collaboration, and mentorship.

WWEST and Deanna Flinn connected with these women to conduct interviews about their lives and careers, which were used to inform the photography process for each of them. The goal was to find settings that would show the women making and nurturing connections throughout their lives.

The “In Plain Sight” Exhibition will be available to Science World visitors from March 2 to April 17, 2020 but this opening reception is your chance to see it free of charge as well as an opportunity to meet the women behind the project.
