The Department of Linguistics encourages graduate student participation in conferences world wide. In April 2016, a group of our MA and PhD students represented SFU at the concurrent meeting of the Northwest Linguistics Conference (NWLC) and the Cascadia Workshop in Sociolinguistics (CWSL) at the University of Washington.

PhD student Emanuela (Emma) Mileva presented Joint Productions as a discourse strategy in alternative medicine sessions.

MA student Pocholo (Poco) Umbal presented The Canadian Shift among Filipino-Canadians in Metro Vancouver.

MA student Lisa Shorten had a busy summer, attending and presenting at two conferences in just two months! Lisa traveled to Spain with her supervisor, Dr. Suzanne Hilgendorf, to attend Sociolinguistics Symposium 21 at the University of Murcia; view the abstract of her presentation, "Negotiating the Value of English at the Inner/Expanding Circle Interface: The English language teaching industry in Vancouver, Canada."

SFU's Centre for Research on International Education and the Faculty of Education hosted Internationalizing Higher Education: Past Practices and Future Possibilities, at which Lisa presented "Pathway to Global Citizenship: The role of private English schools in the Internationalization of higher education."
