Your papers are now due. Papers that are late but arrive today will lose one step (e.g., from an A+ to an A, or from a B- to a C+). Papers arriving after today will lose one letter grade per day.
I will have extra office hours on Monday, December 12 from 11:00-noon, and on Tuesday, December 13 from 1:30-2:30.
The final exam is from noon to 3:00 pm on Wednesday, December 14. Please check go.sfu.ca for location
and to verify the time and date. As with the midterm you will be allowed to bring one letter-sized
sheet of notes and a non-communicating calculator (for example, you can't use the calculator on
your phone).
Wednesday, 11/23/2011:
Problem Set #9 (Instrumental Variables) is due. The answer key and its supporting files psu6.pdf and qunionization6.r are now available.
Don't forget that the draft of your paper is due (by WebCT) on Friday.
Thursday, 11/17/2011:
I made a small change to Problem Set #9 to make it easy - you don't have to do the
first-stage F-statistic, and I am now giving you some additional advice on how to
do 2SLS regression in R. Please download the
revised version of the problem set.
It's time to start thinking about a paper topic. The deadline for having an approved topic is Friday, November 4. We will talk on Wednesday about some ground rules,
and I will show you a few useful resources.
Wednesday, 10/12/2011:
Problem Set #4 is due. Its answer key is now available, as is the supporting document psu1.pdf.
The code I used to generate my results is available as a zip file.
Problem Set #5 is due. Its answer key is now available.
The midterm exam will be held in class on Monday, October 17. It will cover material through the MLR model, which we will hopefully finish today. You will be able to bring a calculator and one standard-sized (A4 or 8.5x11) sheet of paper with writing on both sides.
I will post the answer keys for PS#4 and PS#5 during class on Wednesday. It might be a good idea
to photocopy or scan your problem sets so you can refer to them as you study for the midterm.
Wednesday, 9/28/2011:
Problem Set #3 (Statistics) is now due.
Its answer key is now available.
I would like you to finish Problem Set #4 by Wednesday, October 5.
However, it can be time-consuming for students who have limited computer skills,
and so its due date is Wednesday, October 12.
Problem Set #5 will also be due on that date, so please do not procrastinate on Problem Set #4.
Wednesday, 9/21/2011:
Problem Set #2 (Probability) is now due.
Its answer key is now available.
The statistical package we will be using in this class is R. R is free software and is
available for almost all operating systems. It is installed in almost all campus labs.
You can download and install R at
http://www.r-project.org/.
SFU also has a license for a commercial version of R called S-Plus. S-Plus is more user-friendly
than R, but is not available for the Mac (at least under our license). It is also installed in most
campus labs. You can download and install S-Plus at http://www.sfu.ca/itservices/technical/software.html.
