Liberal Arts and 55+ Program sets new record for registrations

July 25, 2019
We've come a long way! In the 1960s, registration at SFU took place over three days on a giant board in the gym.

As our Liberal Arts and 55+ Program gets set to celebrate its 45th anniversary this fall, we’ve already reached another milestone. On July 24, the opening day for registration in the program’s Fall 2019 courses, we received a record 1,758 registrations in a single day. In fact, more than 75 per cent of registrations took place within the first hour.

More than 900 students signed up for at least one of the 61 offerings available, with nearly 90 of those students joining the Liberal Arts and 55+ Program for the first time.

While the majority of students now register online, a devoted number continue to visit our Vancouver registration desk in person. Registration officially opened at 10 a.m., but a line of early risers had begun forming hours earlier in an attempt to beat the rush.

In total, 12 courses filled in one day—with one course (China: Old and New, and the “Foreign Barbarian”) filling in just seven minutes.
