Legal Language and Legal Terminology Management

This course begins with an introduction to the characteristics of legal language and a discussion on how professional interpreters and translators manage terminology in their work. A large portion of this course is dedicated to hands-on practice in English-Chinese and Chinese-English legal glossary compilation which will enable students to develop legal terminology management skills. The course ends with a partially open final exam.

What you will learn

After completing this course, you’ll be able to do the following:

  • Describe the characteristics of legal English and legal Chinese
  • Describe the basics of terminology management
  • Conduct terminology research
  • Compile and build up English-Chinese and Chinese-English glossaries of legal terms
  • Use those bilingual terms in your legal interpretation and translation work
  • Apply what you have learned in this course when working on the legal knowledge and terminology section of a certification examination

  • Prepare to spend 2–3 hours per week on coursework in addition to attending classes
  • Expect lectures, presentations, case studies and discussions

To graduate with the Legal and Interpretation and Translation Certificate, complete all courses with an overall grade of B– (70%).
