Christina's advice for Writer's Studio applicants

What are you looking for in your workshop group?

I want my workshop to be a place of generosity, thoughtfulness and enthusiasm, where we develop a strong sense of community during our year together. This should be a place to feel safe in our writing: to flex new creative muscles, to experiment, to push a project towards completion, to change genres and styles if we feel called to. I hope that my workshop will also be a place to shed old insecurities about our abilities or worth as writers. Above all, it should be fun. The short answer: I’m looking for workshop members who will help create that kind of collaborative and supportive environment with their energy, excitement, writing and goals.

What do you look for when reading an applicant's submission?

I am looking for a spark, that “something different,” big-time enthusiasm, a sense of joy being found in the act of writing. Interesting characters, an unexpected premise, a lively voice. It doesn’t matter to me if people are working on a single book-length project that is already underway and well-articulated, or if they are focused on short fiction/essay, or they’re not yet sure what they want to work on. If the writing sample is strong and compelling, that's the most important thing. This is a fiction and non-fiction workshop and writers can be focused on one or the other, or both! Tell me why you want to write, why you need to write, what you hope to gain from a year at the Writer’s Studio.
