We would like to bid farewell to Carmen Chin who has moved to the Department of Economics. Carmen served as our Communications and Events Coordinator in a joint role with the Department of Linguistics from June 30/19 to March 3/20.
Elder Ruby Peter and Hul'q'umi'num' Language and Culture Society featured in CBC News

CBC News published an article highlighting the work Elder Ruby Peter and the Hul'q'umi'num' Language and Culture Society has done to preserve the Hul'q'umi'num' language. This past spring, four generations of Elder Peter's family received university honours from SFU.

SSHRC Impact - Partnership Award

Professor Marianne Ignace was awarded the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Impact - Partnership Award at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. She is being recognized for her achievements in Indigenous language revitalization, and the impact she has made beyond the social sciences research community.

FASS Cormack Teaching Award

Regena Seward-Wilson crossed the Convocation stage with her MA degree in Linguistics in a First Nations Language.
Her MA project is titled "ni’ q’ushintul’ ’u tunu shhw’alukw’a’ | Traveling with my family: Growing and learning in the Hul’q’umi’num’ language".

We would like to welcome Cheyenne Cunningham to the FNLP team as the new Program Coordinator. Cheyenne brings to FNLP her familiarity of First Nations language initiatives. Cheyenne is a recent (inaugural cohort) graduate of SFU's new Master of Arts in Linguistics of a First Nations Language Program and is a First Nations language teacher in her community.
Governor General’s Innovation Award

Professor Marianne Ignace and Chief Ronald E. Ignace received the 2019 Governor General’s Innovation Awards at the award ceremony in Ottawa.

2018-19 First Nations Languages Graduates!
June 13, 2019
The first cohort for the Master of Arts (MA) program in Linguistics of a First Nations Language received their degrees this week. There were 24 convocating students from the program who were part of the Burnaby cohort (Haida, Halkomelem, Kaska, Secwepemctsin and Tahltan) and the community-based cohort (Hul’q’umi’num’) in Duncan.
Students from the Certificate in First Nations Language Proficiency Program were also conferred their certificate credential during Convocation.

Ruby Peter Awarded an SFU Honorary Degree
Ruby Peter is a Coast Salish elder who for six decades has brought her love of Hul’q’umi’num’ cultural traditions to her language teaching and linguistic research. SFU conferred the Doctor of Laws, honoris causa to Ruby Peter in recognition of her work.
International Year of Indigenous Languages
The United Nations declared 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages. The goal is "to encourage urgent action to preserve, revitalize and promote" Indigenous languages. en.iyil2019.org/about/
