The IRMACS Centre is pleased to announce that Dr. Piper Jackson has accepted a position as a PostDoctoral Fellow in Complex Modelling. Dr. Jackson, a former member of the MoCSSy Program, recently obtained his Ph.D. in Computing Science under the supervision of Dr. Uwe Glasser. During his term with the IRMACS Modelling Consortium, Dr. Jackson will work on various modelling projects under the supervision of Drs. Borwein, Dabbaghian, and Sixsmith.

The IRMACS Centre welcomes all participants of the conference Selected Areas in Cryptography 2013 (SAC 2013)  Between August 14 - 16, 60 researchers from around the world will discuss various topics including design and analysis of symmetric key primitives and cryptosystems; efficient implementations of symmetric and public key algorithms; mathematical and algorithmic aspects of applied cryptology; and elliptic and hyperelliptic curve cryptography.

On behalf of the IRMACS Management Committee we are pleased to announce that Dr. Andrew Sixsmith has accepted a position as one of our Deputy Directors. Andrew has been an IRMACS Project Leader and a member of the management committee for many years. Andrew is also a Professor and Director of the Gerontology Research Centre at SFU. We welcome Andrew in this new role and look forward to helping him implement exciting new initiatives in the near future.

On July 31, 2013, Dr. Mario Pinto, Vice-President Research, announced that the IRMACS research community voted in favour of the recommendation to appoint Dr. Felix Breden as the IRMACS Centre Executive Director for a three-year term. Dr. Breden's term will commence on September 1, 2013. We congratulate Dr. Breden on becoming IRMACS' Executive Director. We have no doubt that under Dr. Breden's leadership the IRMACS Centre will further flourish and continue to significantly contribute to the benefit of the whole SFU community.

We are sad to announce that Mr. Andy Gavel will finish working at the IRMACS Centre this Friday, August 2. With his many skills, diverse knowledge and particularly his positive attitude, over the last five years Andy has greatly contributed to the success of the Centre. We wish Andy much success in the next phase of his life.

The members of the IRMACS hosted HIV-IMPACT Group presented their research results at the Operational Research Applied to Health Services 2013 Conference held at Koç University, Rumeli Feneri Campus, Istanbul, Turkey, July 7-12, 2013.  Sarah Kok presented the paper "Operational strategies for improving the HIV testing program in Vancouver, Canada" and Sandy Rutherford presented the paper titled "Estimating HIV Incidence: A mathematical modelling approach".

The IRMACS Centre would like to welcome the Institute for the Study of Teaching and Learning in the Disciplines, as the newest addition to its community. In the words of Professor Cheryl Amundsen, the Director of the Institute, the primary purpose of the Institute is to inspire, support, and enhance faculty-led inquiry into all aspects of teaching and learning at SFU.

Mr. Julian Sahasrabudhe, a member of the IRMACS Ramsey Working Group, successfully completed his master's studies at the University of Cambridge. Julian will work on his doctorate under the supervision of Professor Béla Bollobás at the University of Memphis. Mr. Alejandro Erickson, a member of the IRMACS Math Catcher Outreach Program, has accepted a post-doctoral position at Durham University, Durham, England. All of us from the IRMACS Centre congratulate both Julian and Alejandro on their achievements and wish them much success in the future.

The IRMACS Centre would like to welcome all researchers involved in its newest project "HIV_lab" led by Dr. Zabrina Brumme, Faculty of Health Sciences. Dr. Brumme’s current research integrates molecular biology, epidemiology and computational approaches to study HIV evolution in response to selection pressures imposed by the human cellular immune response.

A call for nominations has been issued for the IRMACS Centre Executive Director position, for a period of five years. All project leaders and collaborators of the IRMACS Centre within the past three years are eligible to nominate an SFU faculty member for the IRMACS Centre Executive Director position.  A completed nomination form, signed by the nominee, and an abbreviated CV and/or statement of interest from the nominee, must be received by the Office of the Vice-President, Research by Monday June 10th, 2013.
