The SFU Community Engagement Initiative awarded the proposal titled The IRMACS Centre: Controversy, Ideas, Debate. The main idea of this community engagement series hosted by the IRMACS Centre is to address the shortcoming that a large community living on Burnaby Mountain has no opportunity to engage in culturally and academically relevant events organized by SFU.

The team of researchers co-led by Dr. Andrew Sixsmith, IRMACS' Deputy Director, was successful with their letter of intent for the current round of the 2015 NCE Network Competition. Among other goals, the AGE-WELL network aims to provide a better lifestyle by developing and implementing new technologies for healthy aging. Congratulations, Andrew, and good luck with the rest of the grant process.

On Saturday, Octobar 26, 2013, the IRMACS Centre will host the 2nd Annual Tox Talks Graduate Student Symposium. The Symposium is an opportunity for graduate students from SFU REM & Biological Sciences to present their research or proposals and to meet other like-minded students.

The 4th Annual Aboriginal Students in Math and Science workshop is scheduled for October 22, 2013. The IRMACS Centre will host a group of about 70 Aboriginal high school students and their teachers for a day of hands-on mathematics. The IRMACS Centre is pleased to announce that Mr. Ali Nadaf is the fourth recipient of the Peter Borwein Annual Graduate Scholarship in Mathematical and Computational Modelling of Complex Systems Award. Mr. Nadaf, who completed his M. Sc. in Industrial Engineering, is a Ph.D. candidate in Pure Mathematics and a member of the IRMACS Complex System Modelling Group.

In Fall 2013 the IRMACS Centre will host a new installment of the Canada Research Chairs Seminar Series. The first presentation by Dr. Mark Brockman from the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry is scheduled for Thursday, October 10th. Dr. Ian Foster, Director of the Computation Institute, a joint institute of the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory, will be visiting the IRMACS Centre on Tuesday, October 1, 2013. Dr. Foster will be the first speaker in the Fall 2013 session of the Coast to Coast Seminar Series.

Dr. Vahid Dabbaghian and Dr. Vijay Mago, long term affiliates of the IRMACS Centre, are editors of two books, just pubilshed by Springer, on the topic of modelling of complex systems: "Computational Models of Complex Systems" and "Theories and Simulations of Complex Social Systems". The first book was dedicated to Dr. Peter Borwein, the Founding Director of the IRMACS Centre. For more details click here.
