FINANCIAL AID AND ASSISTANCE
Pursuing a medical education often involves using a combination of funding sources. Oftentimes MD students will make use of a variety of options throughout their studies. Below are some options you may want to explore as you progress through your studies.
Government Student Financial Assistance
MD students are encouraged to explore government student financial assistance to support their studies. For BC residents, Canada and BC issued student loans are interest-free.
How and when to apply:
- BC residents apply for assistance through StudentAidBC.
- MD students apply for student financial assistance on a term-by-term basis.
- The application for the 2026-2027 program year will be available in mid-June 2026.
Once applied, students are automatically considered for all loans (repayable) and grants (non-repayable) that they might be eligible for. The amount of student assistance available to you is determined by your assessed need, whether you have dependents, the length of your study period and the maximum amounts set by the Canada Student Financial Assistance Program and by StudentAid BC.
Visit the Financial Aid and Awards website to learn more loans and grants. Visit their Dates and Deadlines page for updated information on when to apply for funding.
Medical Student Line of Credit
Government student financial assistance has maximum weekly and lifetime funding limits. If you have unmet financial need and require additional funding to support your studies as a MD, you may also wish to explore a Medical Student Line of Credit through your financial institution. This financial product has been tailored for medical trainees and recognizes their overall cost of attendance to complete their program of study.
FINANCIAL LITERACY
You’ll have access to programs and resources designed specifically for medical learners, covering topics such as financial planning, budgeting, debt management and more.
HOUSING
SFU offers several housing options for on and off-campus living through Residence and Housing.
*Note: MD Program students will apply under graduate housing.
