The University Research Ethics Board (REB) is an independent committee established by Senate. The REB is charged with ensuring compliance with the Tri Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct of Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2) and Policy R20.01, Simon Fraser University's policy and procedures for review of ethical considerations arising from research involving human participants.

Submission Deadlines

There are no deadlines for minimal risk applications. If your study qualifies as minimal risk you may submit the application anytime and it will be reviewed on a sequential basis.

Meetings

The REB meets to review research studies on the second Wednesday of the month with some exceptions due to the university calendar. These meetings are closed to the public.

Deadlines for Full Board Review

Submissions that may require Full Board Review (e.g. may be greater-than-minimal risk) must be received by 4:30pm of the deadline as listed in the table below in order to be reviewed at the corresponding REB meeting date. Applications received after the deadline will be deferred to the following meeting date.

The Principal Investigator must indicate clearly in their application that s/he believes the study may require Full Board Review or that s/he believes the study may be considered greater-than-minimal risk. A failure to indicate this possibility to ORE staff may result in a delay in the review of your study by the Full Board. The Chair, REB, and the Director, ORE, reserve the right to forward any study they believe should be reviewed and approved by the Full Board.
