Our Indigenous Student Recruiters

Madison Chad, Indigenous Student Recruitment Coordinator

As an SFU alumnus and a Métis member of the SFU community, being able to support prospective Indigenous students through the admissions process and on their journeys to SFU is an incredibly rewarding role. I was able to attend SFU because of the support an Indigenous student recruiter gave me when I was in high school, and I welcome all Indigenous students who are interested in post-secondary education and SFU to reach out. I am always willing to provide support!

Amanda Seymour, Indigenous Student Recruitment Coordinator

I have had the privilege to live both in the city and on reserve in my home community. I have always been drawn towards youth. I volunteered with Indigenous youth in high school and mentoring programs in community -  my spirit is lifted when I have the opportunity to encourage and support other young Indigenous people. Attending post-secondary was an expectation from my parents who were the first in their families to attend higher education. I was supported during my academic journey, and I am eager to support your dream of higher education!

I know what it’s like to stand at the beginning of an education journey, unsure of what lies ahead. I would not be where I am today without the support and encouragement of Indigenous mentors and community members who walked with me. It’s from that place of gratitude and experience that I welcome you to SFU with pride, respect, and a deep commitment to your success.

We will train skilled physicians who are ready to collaborate, lead, and deliver high-quality, team-based care with respect for diverse perspectives and Indigenous knowledge systems. Our graduates will serve where they are most needed and help shape a more just and community-centred primary care system across British Columbia.

The School offers two admissions streams: the open stream and the Indigenous stream. Applicants are invited to apply through the admission stream that best aligns with their background and experience.

When I first came to SFU, I didn’t know the Indigenous Student Centre (ISC) existed. As someone who grew up removed from my culture, I felt like I did not belong at the ISC and that their services were not for me, but the staff proved me wrong. They welcomed me, supported me and taught me so much throughout my time at SFU.

Education is more than just learning, it’s a journey to transform oneself. It is about reclaiming our rightful space, uplifting our voices, and honouring the teachings and dreams of those who came before us. As an Indigenous student, you are part of a long legacy of resilience, knowledge and strength. You all come from strong people and Nations.
