Admission to an alternate program
This information is intended for applicants who have received an offer of admission to their second choice program.
If your first choice was the Beedie School of Business but you were admitted to an alternate program:
1. Take time to assess the requirements of an internal transfer (from another SFU Faculty) to SFU Beedie
Students who are admitted and choose to accept an offer to your alternate program choice, but are still interested in the Beedie School of Business, can learn more about the internal transfer process online and/or by connecting with a Beedie Academic Advisor.
2. Identify alternate pathways to attain your goals
There are many pathways to a particular career; seek experiences and opportunities that will help you grow and develop your skills and talents. Programs, such as the Business Minor, can complement other degree options and give you a base knowledge in business administration.
3. Speak with an advisor to determine your best option
After reflecting on the above, if you are unsure of next steps, come speak to an Academic Advisor regarding your options of transferring into a Beedie program. To make an appointment with an advisor, see: www.sfu.ca/students/academicadvising/contact_us.html.
If your first choice was to any of the Faculties of Applied Sciences; Communication, Art and Technology; Education; Health Sciences; Science; Arts and Social Sciences; or Environment—but you were admitted to an alternate program:
1. Consider the possibility of an internal transfer (moving between programs)
Often, this requires completing the lower division or first- and second-year course requirements of the program and meeting the minimum grade requirement. Many programs have unique requirements so be sure to
- consult the academic calendar
- talk to an academic advisor in Student Services and/or an advisor for the program(s) if you have any questions about the degree requirements or the internal transfer process
2. Identify alternate pathways to attain your goals
Seek experiences that will help you grow and develop your skills and talents, focusing less on one absolute career choice and the linear route to get there. Consider the multiple career possibilities offered by other programs – are there other programs that allow you to reach your goals? For more information, see:
3. Remember the importance of finding the right fit for you
Take some time to reflect on your personal values. Give yourself some time to explore and assess the fit between you and the courses available to you in your second-choice program. Remember that many SFU courses at the lower-division level are open to students in all faculties. You don’t have to declare your major today!
If you have further questions or you would like to consult with an academic advisor while you’re making a decision, please book an appointment.
