SFU Policies and Supports
Can SFU contact IRCC on my behalf and request expedited processing of my study permit application?
Processing times for study permit applications can vary depending on several factors including where you apply from. To check the most up-to-date estimated processing time for your region, review the IRCC processing times.
📌 Important Notes:
- The IRCC processing times are estimated and are not a maximum or a guarantee. Some applications may take longer to process.
- Your processing time begins once your application is complete, including biometrics, immigration medical exam (if required), and all supporting documents.
- There are no formal options to request expedited processing for study or work permit applications.
- Post-secondary institutions, including SFU, cannot intervene with IRCC or request faster processing on your behalf.
How can I check the status of my application?
- IRCC Secure Account – Sign in to view updates and messages about your application.
- IRCC application status tracker – Create a tracker account to see the status of your application.
What if my application is taking longer than the estimated IRCC processing time?
If your application has exceeded the estimated processing time listed on the IRCC website, you can request an update using the IRCC web form.
When submitting a web form, consider including a cover letter (see our template: Letter of Explanation) that explains:
- Your application has exceeded IRCC’s posted processing time.
- A delay may impact your ability to begin studies on time or require admission deferral (or readmission depending on your situation).
- How a deferral or readmission would affect your academic plans or personal situation.
The final decision will be made by the IRCC immigration officer.
