TRAINING CERTIFICATIONS INSURANCE

Careful planning, risk assessment, training, and preparation are essential to ensuring that field activities are conducted safely and responsibly. This section covers required training and certifications to conduct approved field activity and insurance needed or available.

Vehicle, Boat, and Drone Safety

Risk Management provides guidance on the safe and appropriate use of SFU vehicles, vessels, and drones, including accident reporting requirements and procedures for renting, leasing, purchasing, and disposing of vehicles and vessels.

Consult and follow the vehicle and vessel guidelines.

As required by SFU, copies of valid driver’s licenses and abstracts, as well as boat and drone operator certification documents, must be submitted to the appropriate unit and the Dean’s Office Field Operations Manager.

For vehicles follow the Vehicle Use and Insurance Guide

For Vessels/Boats follow the Marine Vessel Guidelines and Transport Canada Small Commercial Safety Guide

Drones

Drones, also known as Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs), are regulated aircraft. Before operating a drone, ensure you understand and comply with all applicable regulations in the area of operation.

In Canada, drone use is regulated by Transport Canada, and operators are considered pilots. SFU faculty, staff, and students conducting SFU-sanctioned activities must comply with Transport Canada requirements and register their drone with SFU Risk Services.

For guidance and drone registration information as well as liability insurance provided by SFU see the lower part of https://www.sfu.ca/srs/risk-emergency-planning/vehicles-vessels.html.

First Aid

First Aid certification is required to conduct field activities with students at SFU. Requirements are based on WorkSafeBC Occupational Health and Safety regulations.

Minimum first aid requirements must be established through a first aid assessment. A separate assessment is required for each location, as hazards and access to medical care can vary significantly. The assessment determines the minimum level of first aid certification and first aid kits required for the activity.

The first aid assessment criteria, first aid certification requirements, and first aid kit types needed can be found in Appendix I of the Field activity safety guidelines.

Please note that SFU offers a subsidized Remote First Aid and Transportation endorsement course every March consisting of two to three days training on Burnaby campus. Get in touch with the Field Operations manager if interested in taking this course.

Insurance

SFU Risk Services provides guidance on contracts for renting and loaning of equipment, proof of Insurance (Certificate of Insurance) required by non-SFU parties, as well as insurance policies covering SFU owned equipment and property.
