Spaceflight: Bad to the Bone with Dr. Leigh Gabel [Webinar]

Dr. Gabel will share findings from the recently completed University of Calgary TBone study, funded by the Canadian Space Agency. TBone followed 17 astronauts before and after 6-month missions to the International Space Station. Despite daily exercise, astronauts returned to Earth with the equivalent of nearly 2 decades worth of bone loss. TBone examined predictors of bone loss, including mission duration and pre-flight measures such as biomarkers of bone turnover and exercise habits. Findings from TBone are also relevant to the bone health of Earth-bound folks, as unloading in microgravity helps us understand bone loss due to injury, disuse and aging.

Time: May 26, 2021 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. PDT
Location: Online Webinar

The Praxis Ideation Challenge Workshop Series

Developing a prototype or MVP is only the beginning, now you will have to sell it!  Getting innovations to target audiences involves strategy, significant investment, effective communication, robust networks, and some luck.  Having a solid proof-of-concept or MVP now requires an understanding of commercial strategies and business models.  What are your “value proposition” and your competitive advantage? Do you license your innovation, or do you build a company?  Will your company engage in manufacturing, distribution, or marketing? How will you fund your pathway? Are there alternative pathways? Learn all this & more Ideation Clinic's June workshop.

Mon, June 7, 2021 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM PDT

ANNOUNCEMENTS

BPK Peer Mentor Applications Open

Hello.

Hope you are well. The pandemic has effectively flattened a lot of opportunities for social engagement. However, in spite of this, the BPK Peer Mentorship program has been at its strongest over the five years I've been a part of the program. While this is definitely due to the exec team, past year's mentors, and BPK and Faculty of Science staff, we hope to keep improving and sustaining BPK PM in future years.

As such, under the guidance of Nathan and Ryan as its new co-directors, the exec team and I invite you to apply towards being a BPK Peer Mentor:

Please click and complete the application on this websurvey, by June 16th.

More info can be found here, but essentially, a BPK Peer Mentor will undergo summer training (up to 15 hours) and be assigned 1 - 3 BPK mentees, or BPK-major intended students in their first (transfer) year at SFU. In getting to know other mentors, helping someone once in your shoes, and sharing your stories and understandings, we hope that you can also add to the BPK community in future endeavours, through BPK PM.

Feel free to ask questions at bpkpm@sfu.ca, and thank you for reading this.

Well wishes,
Victor and BPK PM Exec Team

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Cardiovascular Physiology Laboratory Seeks Volunteer Spanish/English student translator

We are seeking an individual who is comfortable reading scientific articles and is fluent in both English and Spanish. We are hoping you will be able to read two research articles written in Spanish and answer some questions about the articles in English. The articles are about the impact of bowel care on quality of life after spinal cord injury. The lack of access to translation services for researchers can present an equity issue, where research from scientists who do not normally communicate in English is deprioritised. Your translation will help us address this equity gap, enabling us to screen these articles and identify whether or not they should be considered in our review addressing this important topic. If you are interested or would like more information about this opportunity, please contact Rebekah Lee (rebekah_lee@sfu.ca) or Elin Sober-Williams (elin_sober-williams@sfu.ca) as soon as possible.
