To be the leading engaged university defined by its dynamic integration of innovative education, cutting-edge research and far-reaching community engagement.
To celebrate SFU’s 50th anniversary, we’re making a landmark commitment to become one of the world’s most engaged universities.
But we need your help.
Our Power of Engagement campaign aims to generate $250 million for a series of inspiring initiatives in three strategic areas: engaging research, engaging students and engaging community. With your support, we’ll build our next 50 years on a strong foundation of dynamic engagement.
Here's what we're planning:
Big Data Research Institute and Research Chairs
“Big data” is the name coined to describe the massive datasets being collected in all areas of our society, which increasingly depends on this data for its decision making. This has led to a growing demand for data scientists in industry, science, medicine and government.
The School of Computing Science plans to develop partnerships across the university and with other universities to create a Big Data Research Institute and a research chair in big data. We are also prioritizing named research chairs in visual analytics and health infomatics. Research chairs allow us to recruit and retain top faculty members.
Student awards and scholarships
We plan to continue to increase the number of scholarships and awards available for computing science students. These awards help attract the best and brightest students and ensure that an education in computing science is accessible to anyone who qualifies.
Engaging the World Fund
We believe in providing a range of opportunities for students to apply their knowledge. The Engaging the World Fund endowment fund will award grants to students who want to practice their skills and assist developing countries through volunteer programs.
We have partnered with a number of organizations that help us achieve our mandate of producing world-class research, providing exceptional education and delivering community outreach programs. Find out more >>
