TEKX 101: Introduction to 3D Printing and Laser Scanning Technologies

This courses will focus on providing the background and skill set to use additive manufacturing (3D printing) and laser scanning technologies but is geared towards users that do not have the traditional mathematics, engineering or technical education for industrial users. This course introduces students to the concept of Maker Space which is a commonly used term for enabling a wider society usage of manufacturing devices like 3D printers

Overview

Learn the basic concepts of additive manufacturing (3D printing) and how it complements traditional manufacturing. Also, related vocabulary, materials compatibility, fundamental operation mechanics and computer design tools will be introduced.

Learn how 3D printers work and how to search for 3D files on the net, find design files on the web related to specific topics such as biology (models of surgical tools), mechanical (3D printed drone parts or reduction gears), household and art-related objects, from toys to scientific objects and tools.

Students survey new fields in 3D printing from biological applications to industrial and construction applications including 4D printing (3D morphing shapes due to the environmental conditions) and beyond. Students will design several different 3D projects.
