Prospective Undergraduate Students

WHY STUDY ENGINEERING SCIENCE AT SFU?

In Engineering Science our program focuses on giving students a much deeper technical and scientific background than most other programs.  At the same time, we target Hands-on experience in our course labs to give you the skills needed to apply that training.  In the mandatory Co-op portion, students get to apply those skills with on-the-job experience, gaining over the program a full year of engineering work experience.  The essence of engineering is the practical application of their technical skills.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

Engineering Science targets the high-tech fields of Advanced Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems and Robotics, Biomedical Engineering and Engineering Physics.  Each of these is the specialized section of typical Engineering programs.  We prepare our students for industrial jobs directly at graduation or to go on to advanced graduate research in the leading-edge fields.

WHAT WILL I EXPERIENCE?

To give you that combination of deep technical/scientific training Engineering Science runs a true tri-semester system, with students taking either classes or coop experience in fall, summer, and spring.

In the first year, we concentrate on giving you hands-on experience in the lab on important electronic instruments combined with an introduction to engineering design concepts. This is combined with computer programming, and the strong Physics and Mathematics courses tuned to give you important engineering tools for the future.

Second-year training is basic electrical and electronic circuits, and computer engineering which focuses on computer software and hardware experience, plus statistics from an engineering point of view.  At the end of the second year, students get their first coop industrial experience.

By the third year, students begin to specialize in one of 5 specializations Advanced Electronics, Computer Engineering, Systems and Robotics, Biomedical Engineering, and Engineering Physics.

WHY CO-OP IN ENGINEERING?

Practical, hands-on experience at SFU will be the foundation of your future engineering science career. Our co-op gives you invaluable industry experience, helps you hone your career choices and ties all your classroom experience together in real-world situations. More than 85% of our students obtain their first job through contacts they made via our co-op program.

Furthermore, if you are interested in going on to graduate school we provide research co-ops where you get to experience what it is like to do graduate-level research under the direct instruction of a faculty researcher in your undergraduate program.  You can even do a BASc thesis from this research as part of your undergrad program. Many who try this find research so engaging they go on to graduate programs and further research in academia or industry.
