Overcoming Inequality Community Summit Postponed due to Covid-19
Given the provincial directive advising that all public gatherings of more than 250 people be cancelled in an effort to contain the COVID-19 virus, we at SFU Public Square have made the difficult decision to postpone our 2020 Community Summit, Overcoming Inequality that was set to take place from April 1 to 9.
While the public health risk associated with COVID-19 remains relatively low in British Columbia, the provincial directive reflects the elevated risks associated with mass events. This is especially true of mass events that are likely to attract attendees who are elderly, from marginalized populations, or have compromised immune systems, as documented in recent recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO), Public Health Agency of Canada, and the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control.
This is a postponement, not a cancellation. We are already in conversations with our partners about mounting the Community Summit this coming fall, and our keynote speaker Richard Wilkinson is eager to join us at a new date and time.
It is disappointing to have to postpone this important conversation. We are proud of the events, programming and partnerships in place for this year’s summit, and were looking forward to sharing them with you.
Thank you for your understanding during these challenging times. We take our responsibility as a community convenor seriously, and we believe this is the right thing to do.
We look forward to gathering with you in the fall. For the latest updates, please subscribe to our newsletter.
