Studying in Canada
I am an undergraduate student who is transferring to SFU from another Canadian designated learning institution (DLI). Do I need a provincial attestation letter (PAL)?
Yes. Starting January 22, 2025, a PAL is required for most study permit applications for SFU, including international undergraduate student transferring from another Canadian DLI to SFU, unless you meet a PAL exemption. The process of applying for a SFU study permit differs between in-Canada and outside Canada applications.
📍 Inside Canada
If you’re already in Canada and have a valid study permit:
- You’ll apply for a study permit extension to reflect your transfer to SFU.
- You must include both your SFU Letter of Acceptance (LOA) and a valid PAL in your application.
- You must submit your application before your current study permit expires.
- If your study permit expires soon, you may need to submit an additional study permit extension application to continue your studies at your current DLI. If you are unsure, please contact an International Student Advisor, Immigration Specialist for assistance.
📍 Outside Canada
If you’re applying from outside Canada:
- This is considered a new study permit application, not an extension.
- You must include both your SFU Letter of Acceptance (LOA) and a valid PAL in your application.
