Studying in Canada

I am an undergraduate student who is transferring to SFU from another Canadian designated learning institution (DLI).  Do I need a provincial attestation letter (PAL)?

Yes. Starting January 22, 2025, a PAL is required for most study permit applications for SFU, including international undergraduate student transferring from another Canadian DLI to SFU, unless you meet a PAL exemption. The process of applying for a SFU study permit differs between in-Canada and outside Canada applications.

📍 Inside Canada

If you’re already in Canada and have a valid study permit:

  • You’ll apply for a study permit extension to reflect your transfer to SFU.
  • You must include both your SFU Letter of Acceptance (LOA) and a valid PAL in your application.
  • You must submit your application before your current study permit expires.

📍 Outside Canada

If you’re applying from outside Canada:

  • This is considered a new study permit application, not an extension.
  • You must include both your SFU Letter of Acceptance (LOA) and a valid PAL in your application.
