Speakers announced for the Symposium on Teaching and Learning—have you submitted your proposal?
The plenary speakers for SFU's 16th Annual Symposium on Teaching and Learning: Voices of Diversity and Inclusion (May 17–18) have been announced. On Day 1, Dr. Nanda Dimitrov (right) and Aisha Haque of Western University will speak about "Navigating Diverse Classrooms: Opportunities for Facilitation and Curriculum Design." On Day 2, Dr. Kyra Garson of Thompson Rivers University will address "Internationalization and Intercultural Learning: What are Students Learning?" Also on Day 2, Dr. Marcella LaFever of the University of the Fraser Valley will present a half-day workshop on "Indigenizing Course Outcomes: Updating your Syllabus to Use the Medicine Wheel as a Curriculum Design Framework." See their photos, bios and abstracts—and download the proposal submission form.
A platform for creating course-based journals and books
Kevin Stranack, associate director for community engagement and learning in the SFU Library, is a proponent of open educational resources and an active participant in the Public Knowledge Project (PKP), a multi-university partnership that maintains an open-source publishing system used around the world. Recently he posted an article describing how instructors can foster learning—and produce shareable content—by having students use the system to create course-based journals and books. Find out more about the initiative.
Two ways to learn more about well-being in learning environments
Teaching practices can have a significant impact on student well-being—a key predictor for student learning and success. SFU Health Promotion and the Teaching and Learning Centre have set up a page on the TLC website to provide faculty members and instructors with one-stop access to well-being resources. Health Promotion, the TLC and the SFU Faculty Association are also co-hosting Building Connections: Well-being in Teaching and Learning on March 7 in the Halpern Centre. The day will include lightning talks, a panel discussion and roundtables featuring faculty members and staff. Drop in for all or part of it, but please register now to let us know you're coming. See the list of presenters and topics.
A video invitation for you
Sanders Whiting (right) is a voice and presentation skills specialist in the Teaching and Learning Centre. He regularly works with faculty members, staff and graduate students on breathing, posture, mental preparation and more to help them become more effective and confident speakers. In a new video he introduces his services and issues an invitation. Take a look.
It's time to customize your online course evaluation forms
Departments in six of SFU's eight Faculties are now using the University's online course evaluation system. Instructors in courses that use the system may add their own questions to the form. The question creation/selection period for this semester began on February 20 and will end on Monday, March 6. Find out whether your courses use the new system—and how to select your questions.
