CELLTR’s Dr. Ismaeil Fazel and Dr. Tun Myint (Faculty of Health Sciences) have collaborated to launch a language and communication pilot initiative that aims to identify and respond to the needs of EAL students in HSCI 130 (Foundations of Health Science). The pilot initiative will complement/enhance students' learning on the content of the foundations of health science.
This past summer, language and curriculum recommendations were made based on class observations and language assessments. In the fall, an embedded post-entry language assessment (PELA), specifically tailored to newly-admitted health science undergraduates, was implemented. Modifications were then made to offer further language and communication focused support in the form of adjunct tutorials, orientation, training, and monitoring. In the spring of 2019, the findings will be shared collaboratively through CELLTR and the Faculty of Health Sciences.
