Get Ready for the First Day of Class

Description

Join us to explore effective strategies to kick-start your fall teaching semester. Discover how to make the most of your first day of class, foster inclusive and welcoming learning environments, establish meaningful connections with students, and maximize the value of office hours.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session, faculty will be able to:

  • Identify practical approaches, tailored to their teaching context, for creating a positive and inclusive learning environment starting from the first day of class

Preparing for the Unexpected: Case Studies in Classroom Management

Description

Join fellow instructors for a lunch and interactive discussion on setting class expectations, managing disruptions, providing accommodation, promoting academic integrity and encouraging student participation.  Using case studies of common teaching situations, we will explore practical strategies to meet unexpected twists that may arise during your teaching journey.

By the end of this session, faculty will be able to:

  • Gain practical strategies for setting clear class expectations, managing disruptions, providing accommodations, promoting academic integrity, and encouraging student participation

Teaching and Learning Coffee and Consultations

Need support with setting up your Canvas shell? Looking for strategies to engage students in large classes, ideas for managing your marking workload, help with information literacy instruction, or want to know more about the Indigenous Curriculum Resource Centre? Connect with the SFU Teaching and Learning support team to receive hands-on support tailored to your teaching needs. Our experienced learning technology staff, educational developers, librarians, and disability access advising staff will be available for consultations.  Bring your laptop and get support in setting up your Canvas course, adding media or other technology tools to your course or engage in a one-on-on conversation for a personalized teaching consultation.
