On Monday, October 27, 2014, the Centre for English Language Learning, Teaching and Research (CELLTR) celebrated its launch at an afternoon reception held at Simon Fraser University’s Diamond Alumni Centre. While the Centre’s physical space (to be located on the first floor of the West Mall Centre in WMC 1392) is not scheduled to open until 2015, the launch provided an opportunity to celebrate the successful proposal for CELLTR by the Faculty of Education, and for attendees to share their thoughts and ideas for the Centre.

Dr. David Paterson, CELLTR’s Acting Director, officially opened the event and shared a welcome message from SFU VP Academic, Dr. Jon Driver with event attendees. Presentations were then made by Dr. Ena Lee and Dr. Sepideh Fotovatian, who introduced CELLTR initiatives currently underway—specifically, the development of CELLTR’s online resources for students, staff and faculty; the designing of professional development workshops for staff and faculty; and the piloting of discipline-specific assessment tools in collaboration with SFU’s Beedie School of Business.

CELLTR gratefully thanks everyone who attended the launch and for all the kinds words of support. The Centre looks forward to working with the SFU community to develop future English as an Additional Language (EAL) teaching and learning supports that help contribute to the educational success of SFU’s diverse student body.
