Private Loans

We recommend that you consider private loans (non-government loans) only after you have borrowed the maximum amounts allowed through the federal student loans program. You can check out the differences between U.S. Federal Direct Loans and private loans at "What are the differences between federal and private student loans?"

There are a very limited number of lenders that will provide private loans to students while attending a school outside of the US.  SFU does not have a Preferred Lenders of alternative loan providers for U.S. students.  We strongly encourage you to research the interest rates, terms of repayment etc of any private loan lenders you may investigate.

Email usloans@sfu.ca to alert Financial Aid and Awards that you intend to apply for private loan funding for follow up regarding requirements and your responsibilities.
