Breath Power, Posture and Pauses: Your Secret Allies for Public Speaking

Does your chest tighten when you speak publicly? Does your delivery become awkward when you face an audience? This two-hour workshop for instructors, staff members and graduate students in instructional roles will introduce techniques to increase your confidence, vocal power and ability to communicate in a relaxed way. The session will be facilitated by TLC voice specialist Sanders Whiting, who draws on his extensive background in music, theatre and education.

NOTE: A $25 cancellation fee may apply for registrants who do not attend or who fail to provide adequate notice of withdrawal (one week’s notice is recommended).

When a speaker is relaxed, the presentation becomes more enjoyable and effective for both the audience and the speaker. This practical workshop will make you aware of the many elements that you can control to ensure a successful presentation—from the way you enter a room and the posture you adopt to the quality of your voice and the pace at which you speak. Learn how to breathe, stand and speak in ways that will increase your comfort level whether you are in a lecture hall or a small group setting.


You will learn how to:

  • Use posture to gain confidence and vocal power
  • Insert pauses to focus your audience
  • Slow down your delivery to increase comprehension
  • Breathe to increase relaxation and connection to your message
