SFU’s Fair Trade Campus designation has been renewed for a second year by Fair Trade Canada.

The designation highlights the university’s adherence to fair trade objectives and practices—better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and improved terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.

“A key part of SFU’s strategic vision is to demonstrate community and global leadership. By becoming a Fair Trade Campus, this helps us work towards our goal and make an impact,” says Mark McLaughlin, executive director of SFU Ancillary Services. “By supporting fair trade, we are doing our part to help ensure that farmers in developing countries receive better prices for their produce and have decent working conditions.

Michael Zelmer, director of communications with Fair Trade Canada, says that over the past year, SFU has set the bar high in the market and at campuses across the country.

“SFU is certainly blazing a trail from one end of the country to the other, making it easier for other campuses to come on board,” Zelmer says.

SFU is considered a leader amongst post-secondary schools across Canada that are promoting the virtues and importance of fair trade.

“If we all work together in the same direction, we will bring significant changes in improving the lives of farmers and their families,” says McLaughlin.
