The School of Resource and Environmental Management (REM) is an applied graduate and undergraduate school in which both social and natural scientists apply inter- and transdisciplinary approaches to research in resource and environmental management. Our mission is to inspire leadership and improve decision-making in environmental management through internationally recognized research, education, professional practice, and community engagement to support a socially just and ecologically sustainable world.

We seek to fill a tenure-track faculty position in Recreational and Commercial Fisheries Management at the Assistant Professor rank. Natural resource management aims to provide societal benefit with minimal conservation risk by regulating actions of harvesters. This trade-off between social, economic, and ecological values is especially complicated with small-scale fisheries, which are primarily motivated by non-monetary values, such as satisfaction or cultural benefit.

We invite applications from Ph.D. scientists with demonstrated expertise in the interdisciplinary aspects of recreational and commercial fisheries managemens. This includes quantitative simulation models and stock assessment, with particular emphasis on decision theory, structured decision-making, and community engagement through collaborative research in choice experiments, creel survey design, and co-management processes. The position will cover important quantitative courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in REM, effectively bridging concepts from multiple disciplines to provide a more holistic view of the complexities of natural resource and environmental management. The successful candidate will develop a nationally and internationally recognized program of research, teaching, engagement, and knowledge mobilization aimed at improving decision-making. Undergraduate courses associated with the position will include REM 221 – Systems Thinking and the Environment; REM 225 – Quantitative Toolkit for Social-Ecological Systems; REM 325 – Uncertainty, Risk and Decision Analysis; and, REM 412 – Environmental Modeling. At the graduate level, the position will teach REM 625 – Risk Assessment and Decision Analysis for Management of Natural Resources

Research and teaching skills associated with the position should include integrating traditional knowledge, experimental design, and decision theory to evaluate trade-offs among management options to provide informative decision advice for management. The purpose of this position is to maintain these critical contributions in REM, while continuing to build interconnections with other natural and social scientists in REM and FENV.

The position in Recreational and Commercial Fisheries Management will be highly community engaged. Particular emphasis will be paid to working with partners at the Provincial, Federal, and Indigenous government levels, applying quantitative skills and an interdisciplinary lens on agency and Nation management problems and decision-making.

The expected start date is April 1, 2024.
