Adjust to a New Culture

In addition to the pressures most students face to succeed academically, as an exchange/study abroad student you also face the challenge of transitioning to a new academic and social culture. Social and cultural wellness is an important component of your overall health, and a major factor in your academic success, so it's important to proactively address cultural transition issues.

If cultural transition issues are overwhelming you and interfering with your studies or personal life, there are people here to help.

  • Make an appointment with a Peer Advisor or Counsellor at Health and Counselling Services. Seeing a counsellor is a common and acceptable way of dealing with difficulties in North America and can be very helpful. All sessions are confidential.
  • Talk with the study abroad staff or an International Student Advisor at International Services for Students. We work closely with exchange/study abroad/international students and are familiar with the transition process.
