As a veteran teaching assistant or tutor-marker with a passion for teaching and learning, what knowledge do you have that could make the life of a novice teaching assistant or tutor-marker easier? We invite you to share your expertise at TA/TM Day. You’ll build your resume, gain presentation experience, receive compensation, and help your peers.

Whether you have tips for managing heavy workloads, relevant insights from your research, or information about how to access a helpful service, your contribution could make a difference in helping someone master and thrive in their role as a teaching assistant.
Use the downloadable form available on this page to submit your session proposal. TAs and TMs who are selected to lead workshops will receive compensation, as detailed below.
TA/TM Day is presented by the Teaching and Learning Centre in cooperation with the Office of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Fellows and the Teaching Support Staff Union at SFU.
Workshop leaders’ responsibilities
- Prepare the workshop (workshops will run 75 minutes with up to 25 people per session)
- Attend a planning meeting prior to TA/TM Day
- Lead the workshop on the day of TA/TM Day
Possible workshop topics
This is merely a list of possible topics. Applicants may propose other titles, including discipline-specific and advanced topics.

- TAing a "W" (writing-intensive learning) course
- Navigating Canvas (SFU's learning management system)
- Reflective practice in teaching

TAs and TMs selected to lead workshops will be paid the current GTA2 hourly rate.
Submission review and selection
Submissions will be reviewed by the TA/TM Day program committee. Criteria by which submissions will be assessed are available below to guide the development of your proposal. The TA/TM Day organizers may approach applicants to request changes to their proposals to better fit TA/TM Day needs.
