Support learning and reflection during Black History Month with simple, thoughtful classroom strategies
Black History Month offers an opportunity to acknowledge and reflect on the contributions and experiences of Black Canadians. Thoughtfully integrating this context into your teaching can help create space for awareness, curiosity and meaningful engagement for students and your scholarship.
CEE has developed two resources to support instructors who would like to acknowledge Black History Month in their courses in ways that feel authentic, reflective and manageable.
A one-page guide offers practical ideas instructors can adapt to their time, teaching context, and discipline—whether that means inviting students to explore Black Canadian history in BC or reflecting on representation within your field.
A presentation deck offers ready-to-use slides and discussion prompts to help instructors acknowledge Black History Month in flexible, discipline-appropriate ways.
Instructors are also encouraged to share information about events and spaces on campus, including the opening of SFU’s new Black Student Centre at the Burnaby campus on February 6, 2026.
If you would like support integrating these ideas into your course, or adapting the materials for your teaching context, reach out to CEE to book a consultation.
