Financial Awards & Assistance

A part of the Global Skills Opportunity, funded by the Government of Canada’s Outbound Student Mobility Pilot Program. The EDI IMA has been created to increase the participation of underrepresented Canadian students (including permanent residents and students with refugee status) in international learning opportunities.

C.A.R.E. SFU Global Travel Award

To be eligible to receive a round-trip flight to areas served by Asia Miles worldwide partner airlines (tax not included), students must be working or volunteering for a not-for-profit organization for a minimum of 1 month, and completing a humanitarian aid project. The C.A.R.E. Housing Society donates the Asia Miles points. Students do not need to be part of co-op to be eligible. Applicants must be flexible on departure dates and routes.

SFU International Co-op Award

This award assists students participating in an International Co-op work term. The student must have accepted an international (outside of Canada) Co-op job offer in order to qualify, and demonstrate a need for financial assistance as it relates to relocation costs incurred due to this placement. Awards are valued up to $1000 each and are available each semester for co-op students of any faculty participating in an International Co-op work term. 

Applications and submissions are through the Bridging International Learning (BIL) Course. Students will gain access to BIL once they have been registered in an International Co-op work term placement.

Below are the application deadlines according to the semester the student is placed:

Spring: February 1st
Summer: June 1st
Fall: October 1st

India Student Mobility Award

This award is designed to assist students studying or working in India. Awards are available for each semester. Applications are accepted on an on-going basis but must be completed prior to the start of the work term / study period.

Hong Kong University BC Alumni Award

Available for Spring semester to Co-op students working in Hong Kong.

BC Bearing Engineers Limited Award

Valued at $300 and awarded during Summer semester to Co-op students working in Latin American, including Mexico. The award off-sets travel and/or living expenses. The work term cannot exceed one year. If multiple applications are received, the award will be given to the student with the highest CGPA.

BC JCCA Centennial Co-op Travel Grant

Valued at a minumum of $500, these grants are available to students from any faculty travelling to Japan for the International Co-op Program. They will be awarded to students who are in good academic standing who have been nominated by SFU. 

Scholarships

Premier's One World Scholarship

Scholarships are available to post-secondary students wishing to pursue post-secondary education outside of Canada or the United States. The scholarships are awarded on the basis of merit.

One World International Scholarship

Scholarships of $1,000 - $3,000 each are available from the One World International Scholarship program. The scholarships are available to students enrolled in an eligible work/study abroad program of at least one year in length, leading to a credential offered by a BC public post-secondary institution. Programs must be at least three weeks in length, and no longer than one year. 

Bursaries and Student Loans

SFU International Co-op Education Bursary

Bursaries will be granted in any term to students in good academic standing who are accepted to the Co-operative Education Program and are enrolled in a work term outside of Canada. To be eligible students must be placed with a co-operative education employer and be in good standing with the co-op program. The award will be made on the basis of demonstrated financial need.
