English Conversational Club - United for Ukraine: Facilitator

Virtual Program 

Embark on an enriching journey to transform lives when you help war-displaced Ukrainians improve their proficiency in English!

Many of these adults possess basic reading and grammatical skills, but they require nurturing in conversational English.

We invite committed volunteers to spearhead conversational groups and workshops, bolstering confidence in these adults and enabling them to communicate their thoughts and feelings effectively in English.

This program is offered in partnership with United Way British Columbia's United for Ukraine initiative.

Tuesdays and/or Thursdays

6:45 pm to 8:30 pm

Your role:

We are looking for enthusiastic and committed volunteers to help facilitate our English Conversational Club program this semester!

Key Responsibilities:

  • Group Facilitation: Help guide conversational circles, ensuring active participation and a safe environment for learners to practice.
  • Workshop Coordination: Help implement workshops centred on real-life scenarios to enhance spoken English skills. Workshops will take place over Zoom.
  • Feedback: Provide participants constructive feedback, enhancing their pronunciation, vocabulary, and conversational tactics. 
  • Collaboration: Work with other volunteers, ensuring consistency and sharing best practices.
  • Engagement: Provide suggestions to the program teachers about potential interactive activities and games that could encourage speaking and improve fluency.

Program dates:

The English Conversational Club runs every Tuesday and Thursday. You may choose to volunteer on one or both of these days. 

  • Time: Volunteers are needed from 6:45 pm to 8:30 pm 
  • Location: Virtually via Zoom 

Duration: From May 14, 2024 to August 15, 2024.

Mandatory Volunteer Training:

Newly recruited volunteers will undergo a thorough orientation, introducing them to our mission, the Ukrainian diaspora, and the specific needs of our learners. This Volunteer Training will take place on:

  • Wednesday, May 8th  
  • From 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm
  • via Zoom

Alternative options will be provided for volunteers who are not available at the above date and time. 

Requirements:

Please note, students and alumni from all universities and colleges may apply for this position.

To thrive in this role, applicants should:

  • Be fluent in English (CLB level 9-12);
  • Have access to a laptop and a reliable internet connection;
  • Be respectful and non-judgmental;
  • Be friendly and reliable;
  • Be encouraging and patient;
  • Be prepared to obtain a Criminal Record Check (futher instructions will be provided);
  • Education or experience related to teaching or adult learning is an asset.
