SuperChefs: Nutrition and Wellness Special Needs Team Leader (Paid)

Help kids to get healthy and have fun!

The SFU Surrey – TD Community Engagement Centre is partnering with SuperChefs, an award-winning program that has run for more than 10 years. SuperChefs Camps immerse kids in the world of healthy food, cooking and interactive nutrition and physical fitness activities to promote lifelong healthy habits. The camps are run in partnership with the Surrey School District SD36, the largest school district in British Columbia. Learn more about SuperChefs and see the program in action here.

Your Role:

As a Nutrition and Wellness Special Needs Team Leader, you will be working with an experienced team to facilitate cooking, nutrition education, and physical activities with school-aged children. You will need to work amicably and collaboratively with your teammates and be a positive role model to program participants.

You will be guiding children 8-12 years of age through our cooking/nutrition/sports program, working with a limited number of children with intellectual and physical disabilities. The program can be adapted to allow participation of these children into our regular program, so it will be a fully integrated “Special SuperChefs” program. You will work alongside experienced SuperChefs team members, but an understanding and some experience working with children, especially those with disabilities is valuable.

In this role, you will:

  • Acquire knowledge about the SuperChefs award-winning program to challenge childhood obesity
  • Help the program participants to put on their best FACES: Food Literacy, Aware of our food systems, Competent in cooking skills, Engaged in physical activity and Savour balanced food choices
  • Acquire knowledge and experience working with kids in a learning environment
  • Develop understanding of how to develop an individualized approach to ensure successful child participation;
  • Apply learned knowledge of the program to effectively facilitate activities like cooking and active games
  • Demonstrate effective group engagement and management techniques;
  • Demonstrate conflict management and clear communication skills;
  • Demonstrate leadership skills.

Students who have taken part in SuperChefs have moved on to education and careers in medicine, dietetics, nutrition, physiotherapy, education, business, dentistry, occupational therapy and more! SuperChefs is an organization interested in working with their Team Leaders over multiple years to build leadership capacity, and offer opportunities for training and networking with experts in the field who can help launch their future careers.

Program dates, times & locations:

  • Late June to Mid-August
  • Monday to Friday 
  • From 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

The camps run from July to August at various schools in Surrey (exact locations to be confirmed).

In addition, camp counsellors need to be available one weekend during the summer for a community event and the last 2 weeks of June for training and orientation. 

Training:

Team Leaders must be available to go through an orientation/training before beginning their role. Training includes culinary procedures, youth education methods, and First Aid/CPR. A combination of online and in-person training will be delivered during the last 2 weeks of June.

Renumeration:

This is a full-time paid opportunity made possible through funding from the Canada Summer Jobs Grant. Team Leaders can expect to work between 30-40 hours per week at $15.65 per hour.

Requirements:

Applicants should have:

  • Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident status
  • Experience working with children 8-12 years of age 
  • Great organizational skills
  • Knowledge of basic food preparation
  • Food Safe Certificate (or able to get the certificate before the camps start)
  • Ability to work well with a team to coordinate programs and activities
  • Understanding of food and nutrition and/or love of cooking
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Interest in sports and health is an asset
