As the internationalization of education continues in Canada and around the world, the teaching of writing has become more complex, and more important, than ever. CELLTR is proud to be a sponsor of the upcoming Symposium on Second Language Writing (SSLW), which will be co-hosted by Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia and take place at SFU’s Vancouver campus August 2-4, 2018. The local chairs of the symposium, which was founded by Arizona State University professor Paul Kei Matsuda, are Joel Heng Hartse of SFU’s Faculty of Education and CELLTR and Professor Ling Shi of UBC’s Department of Language and Literacy Education. The SSLW is an important international conference in the field of second language writing, which draws on work in applied linguistics, TESOL, rhetoric/composition, writing studies and related fields. Second language writing scholars are primarily concerned with teaching writing in languages other than the learner’s home language at all levels, from childhood to K-12 to university to professional contexts. This is the first time in the 20-year history of SSLW that it will be hosted in Canada. Plenary speakers include Ryuko Kubota (UBC), Steve Marshall (SFU), Guangwei Hu (Hong Kong Polytechnic University) and Paul Kei Matsuda (Arizona State University).
