CMNS Peer Mentor Program 

June 2026-December 2026 or
June 2026- April 2027

Do you remember how it felt entering university for the first time? The School of Communication is looking for students who want the opportunity to shape the first-year experience for new Communication students.

Build your resume and become a part of a team of enthusiastic student mentors who will provide a positive and supportive environment for new students entering SFU!

During the Summer semester, successful applicants will complete in-person and online training sessions, attend Course Planning Sessions to meet new students and participate in events throughout Fall 2026.

Students who volunteer for the Spring 2027 term will help support recruitment activities to welcome prospective students to the SFU Community through supporting workshops and other events.

3.  Please share up to 3 recommendation for how the Communication Peer Mentors could help first-year students feel welcomed, supported, and part of the community.

WHY BECOME A MENTOR?

DEVELOP SKILLS

  • Enhance interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strengthen leadership skills and provide first year students with the confidence, knowledge, and motivation to access campus resources and services

BE PART OF A COMMUNITY

  • Contribute your skills and knowledge to positively impact and welcome new students
  • Connect with a network of students, staff, and faculty who are involved with transition and engagement programming
  • Recognition on SFU’s Co-Curricular Record (CCR)

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Engage with mentees and play an integral part in their social and academic transition into university life through attending events.
  • Be a welcoming and approachable peer resource for new Communication students.
  • Attend Monthly Check-in Meetings
  • Support Communication staff with activities for first year students
  • Provide ongoing support to Communication Mentees.
  • Share your experience with prospective communication students during workshops or information sessions
  • Complete Canvas training course and in person (or virtual) components
  • Commit to a minimum of 10 hours of volunteer time per term

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate for this position will:

  • Be a strong communicator and a collaborative team player
  • Be a FCAT student with a major/minor in CMNS with minimum completion of 30 units.
  • Completed CMNS 110, CMNS 120W and 130
