If you enjoy working with people and are looking for a rewarding career in employment counselling or career development, SFU Continuing Studies' 14-week intensive Career Development Practitioner Certificate provides the perfect foundation. Our fast-track program is also ideal for those wanting a quick and effective career transition. Ten required courses, including a three-week practicum, cover these essential career topics:

  • Career development theories, emerging trends and their application implications
  • Code of ethics and taking an ethical decision-making approach
  • Career planning and assessment (formal and informal)
  • Labour market trends, job search skills and industry resources
  • Career advisor skills, such as developing résumés, cover letters and interview skills
  • Building an online presence across social platforms
  • Group facilitation and helping skills
  • Job development, vocational rehabilitation and diversity across groups
  • Effective case management skills and an overview of the employment service delivery model in B.C.

Develop your skills during a professional practicum

A professional practicum with an employment service agency or career services centre will give you three weeks of invaluable experience in the field as well as vital networking opportunities. You'll graduate ready to facilitate, implement and plan a career development program.

Earn or maintain a career designation

Our Career Development Practitioner Certificate is aligned with the competencies outlined in the Canadian Standards and Guidelines for Career Development Practitioners.

When you complete our program, you will be awarded the Career Development Practitioner Certificate from SFU Continuing Studies, entitling you to SFU alumni benefits. Our program will also prepare you to pursue the following professional designation:

The program can also help you maintain a designation. Each course except Practicum I is preapproved for continuing education credits from Vocational Rehabilitation Association of Canada (VRAC) and the College of Vocational Rehabilitation Professionals (CVRP).

In 2010, our program was honoured with a Program Excellence Award from the Canadian Association for University Continuing Education (CAUCE). With over 400 graduates, the Career Development Practitioner program attracts a team of leading instructors, all of whom have over 10 years of related career development experience. We offer the program from SFU's conveniently located Surrey campus, where you can access a full range of university resources.
