Honorary Degree Recipient
At every convocation, SFU awards a small number of honorary degrees—the highest honour conferred by the university. The degrees are awarded as a way of recognizing achievements or exceptional contribution to the public good. Honorary degree recipients' achievements celebrate our values and serve as an inspiration to our students, graduands and our community.
NURJEHAN MAWANI, DOCTOR OF LAWS, HONORIS CAUSA
A lawyer, diplomat, and humanitarian, Nurjehan Mawani is a champion of human rights, inclusion and gender equity. Her groundbreaking work in law and policy transformed refugee determination to recognize gender-related persecution in Canada, sparking change internationally. Her work has empowered women and girls around the world and set the standard for immigration and refugee policymaking.
