Institute of World Literature

With its headquarters at Harvard University and partners around the world, attendance at IWL offers extended engagement in world literature in global perspective through lectures, seminars, and colloquia providing a rare opportunity for junior academics to partake in discussions and lectures on the future of the discipline. Perhaps most valued to WLL students who have attended in previous years, this program provides ongoing community and networking opportunities that extend long after each session ends.

The Institute for World Literature (IWL) was created to explore the study of literature from around the world. As an institutional affiliate SFU's Department of World Languages and Literatures is able to send up to two highly qualified undergraduate students each year at reduced tuition rates. Meeting for four weeks each summer, in locations from Beijing to Istanbul to Harvard and beyond, the Institute is global in its presence as well as its intentions. Designed primarily for graduate students and post docs, this is an incredible opportunity for exceptional WLL students approaching graduation. Applications for this summer program are generally due in January or early February each year. If you are interested in applying speak to WLL's advisor for guidance on the application process.

WLL students who are admitted to this program are also eligible to receive designated reimbursement from the Department for their travel expenses

ANNA LECHINTAN
IWL 2017, UNIVERSITY OF COPANHAGAN

Everyone I met at the IWL was extremely kind and encouraging. I was inspired by the interesting topics of many and their dedication to their studies and speaking to these graduate students, PhD candidates, and the faculty members shed a lot of light on what academia is like. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to gain this insight from them and these conversations solidified my hopes of pursuing an academic career as well.

KAYA HUNTER
IWL 2023, HARVARD UNIVERITY

Attending the Institute for World Literature was one of the most valuable experiences of my undergrad. It gave me the chance to showcase my honours research project and is largely the reason I chose to pursue a masters degree. My time at IWL expanded my perspectives on global cultural production and created a life-long appreciation for what can be learned from approaching global literatures in conversation with each other. Beyond that, IWL welcomed me into an international network of young scholars and I left after one month with genuine new friendships.
