Holiday break!

Like the rest of Simon Fraser University, the SCA will be closed from December 25, 2023 – January 2, 2024, with classes beginning again on January 8. Also, this will be the last Quick News post for the year, too, because Brady Cranfield, the SCA's Communicator, will be on holiday beginning next week. See you in 2024!  

2023 FCAT Awards

Congratulations to all of the winners at the 2023 FCAT Awards, which ran Friday, December 15, 2023, in the Djavad Mowafaghian World Art Centre here at 149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver. And special congratulations to the SCA's Erika Latta (for winning the Emerging Researcher Award) and Peter Dickinson (for winning the Service Award), and SCA alumni Arthi Chandra (for winning the Emerging Alumni Award) and Shauna-Kaye Brown (for winning the Teaching Assistant or Tutor Marker Teaching Award). As part of the event, the SCA Alumni Creative Production and Research Prize was awarded to SCA alumni Francisco Berlanga, Natalie Chan, and Opal McLean for their work on withintensions, a monthly online art magazine. The Prize was also renamed as The Opal McLean SCA Alumni Creative Production and Research Prize, or The Opal, in honor of McLean, who tragically died in a car accident in July, 2023. ⁠

Radul at Plug In

The SCA's Judy Radul is leading the Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art's (460 Portage Ave #1, Winnipeg) Winter Institute 2024, running February 19 – 25, 2024, presented in conjunction with Radul's solo exhibition Live Lecture Streaming Podium: I am Not a Cat. Darkroom of Educational Modernism

The SCA's Sabine Bitter and her collaborator Helmut Weber welcomed Thomas Flierl, Simone Hain, and Ina Wudtke for a conversation about "socialist forms of education, and how these manifested themselves in the cultural houses of the GDR" on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at the neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst (nGbK), presented in support of Bitter and Weber's exhibition Darkroom of Educational Modernism: On Form & Function, which runs to Saturday, January 20, 2024. Mother Cloud Spatial Sound Festival

The SCA's Stefan Maier and SCA alumni Sammy Chien and Caroline MacCaull (as Chimerik 似不像, supporting Ruby Singh) are part of Lobe Studios' Mother Cloud Spatial Sound Festival, which runs February 21 – 25, 2024. More HERE.

Apply to Vines

Vines Art Society​'s (with SCA alumnus Heather Lamoureux as Artistic Director) is accepting applications for the 2024 edition of the Vines Art Festival. Applications are due February 5, and the results are released in March, and the Festival runs August 7 – 17, 2024. More HERE.

Action at a Distance​'s artist call

SCA alumnus Vanessa Goodman's Action at a Distance​ has issued this artist call: Action at a Distance seeks 10 dance artists to participate in the development and performances of Murmurations, a task-based composition, for International Dance Day on April 29, 2024. All abilities and levels of experience are welcome. Artists will be paid as per CADA/West fee standards for rehearsals and performance. We are thrilled to be co-producers of this project along with The Dance Centre and New Works​. Deadline to submit expressions of interest: January 12, 2024. More HERE.
