Remembering Levitin

We're very sad to share news of the passing of the SCA's Jackie Levitin, who was faculty in both our Film Area and SFU's Department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies. We're told Levitin passed at home on March 15, 2024, surrounded by family and friends, and that she asked for people who would like to celebrate her memory to please donate to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives or the Canadian Red Cross. Chambers, Pauly, Kwan, and Proudfoot at Agora

The SCA's Justine Chambers and Mauricio Pauly joined Vanessa Kwan and James Proudfoot for a Creative Residency at Montreal's Agora (#102 – 1435 Rue De Bleury). We can't wait to see what they evetually produce together!  

Gruben in Backbone

The SCA's Patricia Gruben is one of the filmmakers featured in Richard Martin's documentary Backbone, which is screening on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at 6:00 PM at Cineworks (1131 Howe St., Vancouver). More HERE.

TPE turns 20

Turning Point Ensemble, which has the SCA's Own Underhill as Artistic Director and conductor, is celebrating their 20th anniversary, performing on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at 7:30 PM here at 149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver. More info HERE.

FCAT UGC 2024

It's time for the 2024 edition of the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology's Undergraduate & Graduate Conference (UGC), which runs April 15 from 1:00 PM –6:30 PM here at SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts (149 W. Hastings ST., Vancouver). RSVP HERE.

Win Bloom tickets

Mascall Dance is having a ticket giveaway for Bloom, featuring SCA alumnus Billy Marchenski, Rainbow Glitz, Alexa Mardon, and Mario Matias as choreographers, which runs April 11 – 13, 2024, at Left of Main (211 Keefer St., Vancouver). O'Brien's Express Yourself!

SCA alumnus Keely O'Brien is starting a residency with the Richmond Public Library for "creative youth" called Express Yourself!, running Wednesdays from April 10 – June 19, 2024, from 3:00 PM – 4:30 PM at Brighouse Library branch (7700 Minoru Gate #100, Richmond). More HERE.

Tong in Vanitas

SCA alumnus Yi Xin Tong is part of the group exhibition, Vanitas, running March 15 – April 27, 2024, at R & R (1548 Decatur St., Queens), which is "an ongoing collaborative programming initiative of CHART (New York) and Marvin Gardens (Ridgewood, Queens)." More HERE.

Spence on the West Coast

SCA alumnus Alexandra Spence is doing a quick USA West Coast Mini Tour. Her LA show has passed, but you can still catch her on Sunday, March 31, 2024, at Portland's Leaven Community Center (5431 Northeast 20th Ave.) and on Friday, April 5, 2024, at San Francisco's The Lab (2948 16th St.). Pulling To Gather Earth Day Celebration

Pulling To Gather, the "eco-art project" by Art Action Earwig, the "multidisciplinary performance collective" of SCA alumni Minah Lee, Wryly Andherson, and Tadafumi Tamura, is holding an Earth Day Celebration at Colliery Dam Park (635 Wakesiah Ave., Nanaimo) on Saturday, April 27, 2024, from 1:00 PM – 9:00 PM, presented by the City of Nanaimo. Kanagawa's Haiku contest

Here's one for all the Avatar: The Last Airbender fans! SCA alumnus SCA alumnus Hiro Kanagawa, who plays the Fire Lord Sozi in the show, is running a Haiku contest to win his cast & crew shoulder bag. Head to Kanagawa's Instagram all the details.

ReIssue launch party & fundraiser

ReIssue, the "interdisciplinary art writing platform" edited by SCA PhD student Casey Wei, is having a party to celebrate the launch of their Year 3 Anthology that's also a silent auction fundraiser on Friday, April 12, 2024, from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM at UNIT/PITT (2954 – West 4th Ave., Vancouver). Walker for a an "iteration" of Dani and Sheilah ReStack's Shameless Light on April 6, 2024, at 7:30 PM at the Western Front, where the ReStack's exhibition, Feral Domestic, also runs to April 6.
