Adler to direct The Only Animal

Barbara Adler, SCA alumnus and soon-to-be the SCA's former Professional Development Coordinator, is leaving us to become the new Artistic Director of The Only Animal. We'll miss her organizational gumption, creativity, work ethic, and dark, humorous insight around the office. But we're also very happy to see her move onto something she's totally perfect for. New Aesthetics Performance Intensive

Theatre Replacement, which is lead by SCA alumnus and Artistic Director Maiko Yamamoto and co-founded by Yamamoto and the SCA's James Long, are holding their New Aesthetics Performance Intensive from July 17 – 28, 2023, in our studios here at SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts (149 W. Hastings St., Vancouver. Facilitated by Autumn Knight and keyon gaskin, the intensive also features FREE public events, including an artist talk with Knight and gaskin on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at 6:00 PM at The Russian Hall (600 Campbell Ave., Vancouver). An Afternoon Recital with Vomit Fraud

Vomit Fraud (VF), the duo of Kay Higgins, SCA alumnus and Head of Publishing at the Libby Leshgold Gallery, and the SCA's Brady Cranfield (that's me!), are playing tomorrow – Saturday, July 14, 2023 – at 2:00 PM as part of Art Rock Summer, curated by SCA alumnus and PhD student Casey Wei. Fredriksson's Contemporary Dance and Choreographic Thinking Workshop

Hot off her presentation of Ecdysis & Soft Palate, featuring Lighting Design by the SCA's Kyla Gardiner, which ran July 12 & 13, 2023, in Studio T here at SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts as part of the Dancing on the Edge​ Festival, SCA alumnus Emmalena Fredriksson​ is teaching a Contemporary Dance and Choreographic Thinking Workshop (Intermediate / Advanced) on July 15 & 16, 2023, from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM at 45 West Hastings St., Vancouver ($30 – $60 + GST sliding scale per day / drop in or $50 – $100 + GST for the weekend). Ghost [DIGITAL FOLK VR edition]

SCA alumni Shion Skye Carter, Kayla De Vos, Vanessa Goodman (Action at a Distance), Rachel Helten, Rachel Maddock, and Deanna Peters are all involved in the plastic orchid factory's Ghost [DIGITAL FOLK VR edition], which is "an installation and VR performance exploring game culture, community and embodiment," running July 13 – 15, 2023, in 60-minute loops at 4:00 PM, 5:00 PM, and 6:00 PM at Left of Main (211 Keefer St., Vancouver), presented as part of Dancing on the Edge's EDGEoff program. Wreck Beach Butoh

SCA alumnus Barbara Bourget and Kokoro Dance, also featuring SCA MFA student Salomé Nieto, are presenting Wreck Beach Butoh, a tradition they started in 1995, on July 15, 2023, at 10:15 AM and July 16 at 10:45 AM at Vancouver's Wreck Beach as part of the Dancing on the Edge Festival. Women, Life, Freedom

SCA alumnus Goli is part of the exhibition Women, Life, Freedom, which runs to August 26, 2023, at the Cityscape Community ArtSpace (335 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancouver), with a tour with curator Saghi Ehteshamzadeh on Saturday, July 22, from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM. More HERE.

Art Workers Inquiry for Decolonial Potential

Do you identify as an art worker? Do you have feelings about private property? Those are some of the questions Steff Hui Ci Ling is asking in her Art Workers Inquiry for Decolonial Potential survey, which "seeks to examine art workers’ political consciousness of labour and land exploitation." Horror in Seconds calling

SCA alumnus Doaa Magdy's Horror in Seconds, a festival of 60-seconds-or-less horror shorts from emerging BIPOC filmmakers in Canada, is now accepting submissions for their inaugural run from November 22 – 26, 2023, under the theme of Holiday Horror. The deadline is August 23, 2023, 11:59 PM PST. More HERE.

Yassine's Invisible Ink  

SCA alumnus Ghinwa Yassine, who will be a Shadbolt Fellow in the Humanities at SFU in the fall, is seeking SCA and Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies students to participate in a co-created performance for her project, Invisible Ink. Students can contribute through performing, writing, sound design, moving image, and costume and set design. More info is forthcoming, which Yassine will share in a TBA talk.
