Happy New Year!

February 10, 2024, marks the start of the Lunar New Year. Let's all welcome the Year of the Wood Dragon! The 50th Anniversary of the Chinatown Spring Festival Parade, although marked by some disappointing controversy, runs through Vancouver's historic Chinatown neighbourhood on Sunday, February 11, starting at 11:00 AM. The City of Vancouver has shared parking information and a map of the parade's route HERE.

Oleksijczuk at CAA 2024

The SCA's Denise Oleksijczuk is presenting on T’uy’t’tanat-Cease Wyss' x̱aw̓s shew̓áy̓ New Growth《新生林》project (located at 221A's Semi-Public space at 271 Union St., Vancouver) at the 2024 College Art Association of America conference, which runs February 14 – 17 at the Hilton Chicago (720 South Michigan Ave.). Two gigs of improvised music to consider at 8EAST (8 E. Pender ST., Vancouver): Tonight – Friday, February 9, 2024 – featuring sets by Lisa Cay Miller (piano) and the SCA's Mauricio Pauly (de-keyed chromaharp, lapsteel, and electronics) and by (2024 Juno nominee!) Meredith Bates (violin), Parmela Attariwala (viola), James Meger (bass), and Torsten Muller (bass). Doors at 8:30 PM; music at 9:00 PM. More HERE. Moving Matter in NYC

Moving Matter, a short film created by the SCA's Rob Kitsos and SCA alumni Beau Han Bridge and Meagan Woods, and featuring the SCA's Erika Latta and SCA alumni Anna Wang Albini, Sydney Bluck, Olivia Johnson, Desiree James, Brett Palaschiuk, Alexandra Caprara, and Max Tyler-Hite is having its World Premiere on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at 8:15 PM in the Francesca Beale Theater at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (70 Lincoln Center Plaza, New York City), presented as part of the shorts program, Provocative Perspectives, at the Dance on Camera Festival, running February 9 – 12, 2024. SCA Visual Art student Sana Goel is participating in StrideFest 2024, which runs February 2 – 10 at various sites in Burnaby, presented by The Long Table Society. You can see Goel's work in the windows of the Heights Merchants Association at 4019 Hastings St., Burnaby. More HERE.

Cold Road in Edmonton & Calgary

If you're in Edmonton and Calagry, don't miss the local screenings of SCA alumnus Kelvin Redvers' film Cold Road, which was also produced by Redvers' production company IndigiFilm Media, on Friday, February 9, 2024, at 8:45 PM, at Landmark Cinema's Edmonton City Centre location (10200 102 Ave., NW), and on Saturday, February 10,  at 3:14 PM and 7:40 PM at Landmark Cinema's Country Hills location in Calgary (300 – 388 Country Hills Blvd., NE). Hot Dyke Party is on!

The Library Performance Collective, which has SCA alumnus Arthi Chandra as Artistic Director and SCA alumni Alexandra Caprara and Howard Dai as Artistic Associates, is presenting Hot Dyke Party, "a theatre-rock-concert celebrating hot dykes," running February 8 – 10, 2024, at The Birdhouse (44 W 4th Ave., Vancouver). Presented by Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre (VACT), Hot Dyke Party is co-created by Chandra, Caprara, SCA alumni Cindy Kao, and Hannah Meyers, Blue Chu, Hayley Sullivan, and Thule van den Dam, with SCA alumni Brianna Bernard and Dai as Technical Directors, Madeleine Polak as Stage Manager, and SCA student Bernice Paet as Assistant Stage Manager. Here's the latest newsletter from The Only Animal, which has SCA alumnus Barbara Adler as Artistic Director. The newsletter talks about a bunch of recent activities, including an announcement of their next Slow Social event on May 25, 2024, in Vancouver, as part of the Improvised Arts Society's next West Coast String Summit, info about a fundraiser to bring artist / community organizer Mohammed "Mo" Zaqout and his family to Canada from Gaza, plus much more. Hite's A Vista

SCA alumnus Howard Dai participated in the making of regular SCA Sessional Instructor Josh Hite's A Vista, which "features theatrical backdrops used by the Royal City Musical Theatre company at Massey Theatre" in New Westminster. A Vista runs at the Surrey Art Gallery (13750 88 Ave.) until April 21, 2024. More HERE

Richards at ReIssue

Organized through the SCA's undergraduate practicum program, SCA Art, Performance & Cinema Studies (APCS) student Rianna Richards is bringing "her experience in graphic design, editing, and student union work to ReIssue," the "interdisciplinary art writing platform" edited by SCA PhD student Casey Wei. 60 Second Horror Filmmaking Workshop

SCA alumnus Doaa Magdy, who organizes the Horror in Seconds Festival, which is dedicated to 60-seconds-or-less horror shorts from emerging BIPOC filmmakers in Canada, is holding a 60 Second Horror Filmmaking Workshop on February 17, 2024, at The Black Arts Centre (Unit 105 – 10305 City Pkwy, Surrey), which has SCA alumnus Olumoroti Soji-George as one of the Directors.
