Programming

The Teaching and Learning Centre offers the following core programs for SFU faculty members, instructors, TAs/TMs, graduate students, and staff who wish to enhance their teaching practices. Some are designed for instructors in general, while others address specific audiences. They range in format from one-hour presentations to extended series.   • The Art of Teaching Series
    The TLC regularly presents episodes from the acclaimed The Art of Teaching DVD series. Bring your lunch, watch how other instructors handle various teaching scenarios, and enjoy a discussion with your peers. Light refreshments will be served.
  • Certificate Program in University Teaching and Learning
    Ongoing
    This four-month, 120-hour, Senate-approved non-credit certificate program is offered every spring and fall for SFU graduate students who intend to apply for post-secondary teaching positions.
  • EdMedia Protege Program
    Now, Educational Media, Workshop
    This 10-week program uses a cohort structure combined with one-on-one sessions to help instructors develop their ability to create and use media (video, infographics, and much more) in their courses.
  • Experiential Education Dialogues
    Past
    This series of peer dialogue events will showcase SFU instructors and their experiences of using experiential education in their teaching.
  • Instructional Skills Workshop
    This internationally recognized forum for peer-based instructional development is designed to develop instructors' skills through intensive, yet practical, exercises in learning-centred teaching.
  • Learn Tech at Surrey

    The TLC's learning technology specialists organize regular presentations and training sessions for faculty members and instructors at SFU Surrey. Bring your laptop and your questions!
  • Rethinking Teaching: A Course Design Workshop for Faculty
    Are you developing or revising a course? This four-day workshop is designed to support you. By the end, you will have a draft course outline and a plan for implementing new teaching strategies.

  • Symposium on Teaching and Learning
    Attend this two-day event in which SFU educators explore key teaching and learning initiatives, share recent work, and discuss how our collective efforts can transform the student experience.
  • TA Orientation (Surrey)
    This full-day event provides new teaching assistants at SFU Surrey with survival strategies from experienced TAs and basic skills for doing well as a TA. Come to network and have some fun.
  • TA Orientation (Vancouver)
    This full-day workshop provides new teaching assistants at SFU Vancouver with survival strategies from experienced TAs and basic skills for doing well as a TA. Come to network and have some fun.
  • TA/TM Day: The Teaching Orientation Program
    TA/TM Day addresses teaching and technological skills that are essential for you as a teaching assistant or tutor-marker. Sessions will be facilitated by experienced and skilled TAs and TMs.
  • Teaching and Learning Social
    This is an opportunity for faculty members to discuss instructional activities and aspirations with colleagues and professionals who support teaching at SFU. Come to enjoy a drink and snacks.
  • Teaching Circles – Faculty of Science
    Past
    The Faculty of Science and the TLC collaborate to promote discussion about teaching among faculty members and instructors. Join your colleagues for classroom observation and discussion.
  • Voice and Presentation Skills
    The TLC offers practical workshops and programs on topics ranging from voice control and breathing to physical movement and performing in front of a camera for instructors and other individuals whose work involves lecturing or presenting.

  • Your Teaching Portfolio
    This two-part series provides a model and guidance for developing teaching portfolios. Participants will receive feedback on their draft portfolios from other workshop participants.
