Learn Tech Tuesdays at SFU Surrey

Drop-in sessions

If you are a faculty member, lecturer, or sessional instructor at SFU Surrey, drop by the TLC office in Podium 2 any Tuesday to ask a question, discuss an idea, or try a tool related to teaching and learning. One of our TLC learning technology specialists will be there to assist you.

Canvas Sessions

The Learning Technology group have a few sessions on Canvas support. These sessions are designed to help instructors create and improve their use of Canvas in class.

October 9 | 10–11 am | Open session – Ask Us! The New Learn Tech Portal: How can we best support your learning technology needs? | Presenter: Carson Au, Learning Technology Specialist

The TLC's new Learn Tech portal provides you with multiple ways to reach a learning technology specialist for support. This session will describe our new learning technology services and how you can contact us by email, phone, or live chat.

October 16 | 10–11 am | Challenges and Considerations for Using a Bring-Your-Own-Device Clickers Solution | Presenter: Kar-On Lee, Learning Technology Specialist

As students become more mobile, their desire to use their existing devices for student response systems will increase. We will discuss the hows, whys or why nots, and challenges of using a Bring-Your-Own-Device model with student response systems.

October 23 | 10–11 am | Book Your Own Collaborate Session with the New SAS System | Presenter: Christina Drabik, Instructional Support Technician

BB Collaborate is an online conferencing tool available to all instructors and staff at SFU via a site licence. It can be used as a virtual classroom, for meetings, and to offer online office hours, and it is often used to record sessions for later access. In this session, learn how to book your session anytime, anywhere, using the new (SAS) system.

NOTE: The older ELM booking system for BB Collaborate will not be available as of January 2013. Bring your own laptop for this demo and hands-on session.

October 30 | 10–11 am | Canvas Learning Management System: The migration plan for SFU’s new LMS | Presenter: Lynda Williams, Manager, Learning Technology

The Canvas learning management system (LMS) will replace WebCT as SFU’s platform for course delivery and management. Implementation planning is already underway. Learn more about this process and what it means for you and your courses in WebCT. Lynda Williams, Manager of Learning Technology, will describe the migration plan and answer your questions about Canvas, training opportunities, and related issues.

November 6 | 10–11 am | FIPPA Basics for Instructors Using Learning Technologies | Presenter: Robyn Schell, Learning Technology Specialist

BC’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) is a complex piece of legislation that can affect you and your students when you teach and learn online. This session covers the fundamental principles of this act and ways you can protect your students' privacy.

November 13 | 10–11 am | Getting Started with Wikis and Discussions in Canvas | Presenter: Carson Au, Learning Technology Specialist

In this session, you will learn how to create wikis and discussions in Canvas, SFU’s new learning management system. Bring your own laptop for hands-on practice.

November 20 | noon–1 pm | Introduction to Student Response Systems | Presenter: Kar-On Lee, Learning Technology Specialist, and Barry Cartwright (Criminology)

Learn about the hows, whys, and benefits of introducing a student response system in your classes. You will have an opportunity to try one of SFU's supported student response systems.

NOTE: This session starts at noon rather than at 11 am.

November 27 | 10–11 am | Creating Discussion Forums and Linking to Groups in WebCT | Presenter: Christina Drabik, Instructional Support Technician

Learn how to create discussion forums and link them to individual groups to which students can be assigned by you, added by themselves, or added randomly. Bring your own laptop to this hands-on session.

December 11 | 10–11 am | Getting Organized in WebCT Gradebook | Presenter: Christina Drabik, Instructional Support Technician

WebCT has a number of features to efficiently manage information and quickly perform administrative tasks. This workshop will show you how to develop and maintain an online grade book. Bring your laptop and practice in your own WebCT course, assisted by the session facilitator.
