Surrey TA Orientation
AUDIENCE: New and prospective teaching assistants at SFU Surrey
Description
This TA orientation offers a full day of workshops for new teaching assistants working at SFU Surrey. This interactive training opportunity will allow you to explore your role in supporting student learning, hear survival strategies from experienced TAs, and acquire basic skills needed to succeed as a TA. There will also be opportunities for you to network with other TAs and to have some fun.
This six-hour program consists of an introductory session followed by two skill-building and practice sessions (topics include marking and feedback and communication with instructors and students) and ends with an information exchange between the participants and seasoned TAs and their instructors.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this program TAs who fully participate in the six hours of training will:
- Have a clearer understanding of the role of a TA in the teaching and learning environment at SFU Surrey
- Understand practical tasks and responsibilities of a TA at a beginning level
- Be familiar with SFU resources (services, people, documentation) available to TAs, including where to go for support, guidance, and assistance.
Students who attend all six hours of training will receive a Letter of Participation acknowledging their engagement in the TA orientation at SFU Surrey.
Registration
There is no charge to attend, but advance registration is required by Wednesday, December 19, 2012.
