Call for Proposals

EXTENDED DEADLINE: Friday, March 15, 2013

Description

Join other SFU educators as we explore some key teaching and learning initiatives, share recent work, and discuss how our collective efforts can transform the student experience. This year’s Symposium focuses on how faculty members and instructors are enhancing their students’ learning experiences through innovation and inquiry. You will discover strategies, tools, examples, and critical perspectives for embracing change and transformation at SFU.

We invite interactive and collegial proposals from SFU faculty, instructors, teaching assistants, tutor-markers, graduate and undergraduate students, instructional staff, and administrators that demonstrate how your teaching practice, research, and pursuit of scholarship in teaching and learning have benefited your students’ learning. Session topics may include:

  • Curriculum, program, and course re/design, renewal, and assessment
  • Learning technologies such as Canvas (SFU's new learning management system)
  • Integrating research and experiential learning
  • Supporting students with English as an additional language
  • Learning environments and student well-being

Submission of proposals

Apply here to lead a session at the Symposium. All proposals are due by Friday, March 15, 2013 (extended deadline).

Application closed for this year.

You may submit proposals that reference or speak to the “Embracing Change @ SFU” theme for consideration by the program committee for one or more of the following types of sessions: workshop, dialogue/roundtable, panel discussion, World Cafe, or poster.

  • Workshops (60 or 75 minutes) should be action-oriented and of interest and relevance to a wide audience. They should include a short presentation of research findings, illustration of theories and practices in teaching, or show-and-tell of tools and practices, and include activities for attendees to participate in.
  • Dialogue/roundtable sessions (60 or 75 minutes) should, once the facilitator introduces the issues and lays out expectations, see participants grouped at roundtables to discuss and provide practical strategies to deal with these issues.
  • Panel discussions (60 or 75 minutes) are facilitated by teams of three or four faculty, staff, students, or administrators, each with a unique perspective on a particular challenge or opportunity in teaching and learning. Panelists and attendees are encouraged to explore and share possible solutions/outcomes.
  • World Cafe theme sessions (90 minutes) are guided by strong facilitators who, through several conversational rounds, capture and build upon diverse individual points of view to eventually integrate and share a new collective perspective with the large group. Working with a graphic recorder is recommended, but not required.
  • Posters should present summary information about your work in a visual or text format in a way that is of interest to Symposium participants. You will be asked to talk about your poster during a late-day reception/networking session.

Submissions will be reviewed by the Symposium program committee. Criteria by which submissions will be assessed are available below to guide the development of your proposal. The Symposium organizers may approach applicants to request changes to their proposals to better fit Symposium needs.
