One example of indigenized curriculum

Veselin Jungic

SFU's Aboriginal Reconciliation Council is conducting a university-wide dialogue about how the institution can contribute to reconciliation between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities. Indigenized curriculum is one possible pathway. An example of what indigenized curriculum can look like comes from Veselin Jungic (right), teaching professor and associate chair of the Mathematics department, who has created animated films that use a story-based approach to teach math to Aboriginal pre-university students. On December 1, Jungic and his team released "Small Number and the Old Totem Pole" in the Squamish language. Watch the video.

New funding for open educational resources

Open educational resources (OER) offer a number of benefits, including cost savings in comparison to traditional textbooks and adaptable content for new or rapidly changing disciplines. SFU faculty members and instructional staff may receive OER Grants of up to $5,000 to help them adopt/adapt open textbooks and other OER materials for their courses. The next application deadline is February 2, 2017. Find out how to apply.

Spring 2017 TA/TM Day: What's in it for you

For teaching assistants, tutor-markers and sessional instructors, the Spring 2017 TA/TM Day on January 6 is a comprehensive source of information designed to make life easier. Sessions cover everything from working with students' writing to understanding medical benefits—and TAs and TMs may log the time spent at the sessions as part of their TA/TM hours for the semester. Oh, and did we mention the free lunch? Contrary to earlier information, there is no need to register for this event—if you are, or hope to become, a TA or TM, just find the sessions that interest you and drop in. Get the full program, now available as a PDF.

How do you foster well-being in your classroom?

Well-being

Research indicates that well-being is a key predictor for learning and student success. Many SFU faculty members and instructional staff deliberately foster student well-being through their teaching practices and course design. If you are part of that group, consider sharing your work through a seven-minute "lightning talk" at Building Connections: Well-being in Teaching and Learning, a one-day drop-in event taking place on March 7 in the Halpern Centre. The call for proposals is now available; the submission deadline is January 20.

An animated holiday greeting
