Brain and Music Symposium

Ever wondered what goes on in your brain when you make or listen to music? Music transcends cultures, boundaries, and populations; it makes us feel things, moves us, heals us, and we usually don’t think twice about it. But what if we did? What if knowing how our brains process music would allow us to maximize its transformative power in creative, clinical, and community settings?

In Tune With your Brain: Harmonizing Creative, Clinical, and Community is a virtual half-day symposium that aims to bridge the gap between neuroscience, arts, medicine, and the general community towards understanding the incredible power of music across all disciplines. The international event features:

  • An incredible keynote address by world-renowned music neuroscientist, Dr. Psyche Loui (Northeastern University)
  • Fascinating lightning talks and remarks from researchers and musicians across the globe, including UBC president Dr. Santa Ono and Dr. Karen Chan Barrett (UCSF)
  • An expert panel representing creative, clinical, and community realms
  • Musical performances and an exclusive interactive production studio session, where the audience helps make a song in real-time
  • Opportunities to engage, ask questions, and network

Join UBC’s first Brain and Music mini-symposium as we delve into this incredibly exciting emerging field!

Time: Saturday, May 15, 10am-2pm PT
Location: Online Event

Spaceflight: Bad to the Bone with Dr. Leigh Gabel [Webinar]

Dr. Gabel will share findings from the recently completed University of Calgary TBone study, funded by the Canadian Space Agency. TBone followed 17 astronauts before and after 6-month missions to the International Space Station. Despite daily exercise, astronauts returned to Earth with the equivalent of nearly 2 decades worth of bone loss. TBone examined predictors of bone loss, including mission duration and pre-flight measures such as biomarkers of bone turnover and exercise habits. Findings from TBone are also relevant to the bone health of Earth-bound folks, as unloading in microgravity helps us understand bone loss due to injury, disuse and aging.

Time: May 26, 2021 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. PDT
Location: Online Webinar

Important Information - from the Undergraduate Advisor

Summer 2021 Term Information
Important Dates and Deadlines can be found here.

Graduation Checks
For a graduation check, please complete the following steps:

  1. Compare your advising transcript with the checklists found on the BPK website here. The advising transcript only counts completed courses.
  2. If you are declared into any KIN or BIF or BNEU major program, the Academic Progress Report (APR) on goSFU is a fairly accurate tool for most students. Use this tool to cross reference/cross check/double check with your transcript and checklist. The APR assumes completion of all enrolled courses.  (PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN BPK 301/407, YOU WILL NEED TO COUNT BPK 409 IN PLACE OF BPK 301/407, THE REPORT MAY NOT PICK THAT UP AUTOMATICALLY, ONCE USED TO SATISFY THIS REQUIREMENT, IT CANNOT BE USED SOMEWHERE ELSE ALSO.)
  3. After completing the two steps above, if you have additional questions, I am happy to see you for an advising appointment.
